Shenzhen, and how to
get in from Hong Kong.

Most people arrive here overland, and the crossing is where most first-day mistakes happen. Which checkpoint, at what hour, and which metro entrance — then a few things worth doing once you're through.

Why come 科技

Shenzhen is China's technology city and one of its biggest hubs for exporting electronics. It regularly hosts major technology exhibitions, which means a visitor here has a real chance to see where Chinese technology is heading — not in a museum, but on the floor where it's being sold.

It's also the city directly across the border from Hong Kong, so for many people it's the first place in mainland China they set foot.

Crossing from Hong Kong 口岸

1

Before you cross: check your visa, and have an address ready

Confirm which entry route applies to your passport — visa-free, transit visa-free, or a visa — before you reach the checkpoint rather than at it. And have the address of where you're staying written down. If you qualify, all the crossings below move quickly.

Visa status confirmed. Accommodation address to hand.
2

Pick the crossing by the time you'll arrive

The right checkpoint depends almost entirely on the hour:

CrossingHoursBest for
Luohu 罗湖06:30–24:00Daytime arrivals. Hong Kong's East Rail line runs straight to it.
Futian / Lok Ma Chau
福田
06:30–22:30Arriving near Futian. Connects directly to metro Lines 4 and 10 — but read tip 3 first.
Huanggang 皇岗24 hoursThe only option late at night or in the early morning.
Daytime: Luohu. Late night: Huanggang — nothing else is open.

At Futian, the two metro lines don't connect inside the station

Futian Checkpoint station serves both Line 4 and Line 10, but you can't walk between them once you're in. They have separate entrances:

Line 4 — enter from the joint inspection building, straight off the crossing.
Line 10 — enter from Exit C.

Work out which line your hotel is on before you arrive. Picking the wrong entrance means coming back up and walking round with your luggage.

Line 4: from the inspection building. Line 10: from Exit C.

If your visa plans fall through, there is a fallback

Shenzhen's border police can issue port visas at four checkpoints — Luohu, Huanggang, Shekou and the airport — for foreign nationals with an urgent reason to enter who couldn't get a visa from a consulate in time. It's intended for genuine urgency, such as a business invitation at short notice, not as a routine alternative to planning, and approval is at the officers' discretion.

According to Shenzhen Public Security, the Huanggang and airport visa offices run around the clock; Luohu's runs 06:30–24:00 and Shekou's 07:00–22:30. That information dates from August 2025, so check before relying on it.

Plan your visa properly. Know this exists in case something goes wrong.

Getting around 地铁

5

Tap your own card at the metro gate

The Shenzhen metro accepts Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay contactless, and phones with a bank card set up for tap-to-pay. You don't need a local app or a transit card to get moving on your first day — tap in, tap out.

Tap the card you already carry. Sort out Alipay later.

Eating 吃

6

Eat what the city eats on a working lunch: Longjiang pork knuckle rice

Shenzhen is a city of migrants, so food from every part of China is here and done properly. That makes it hard to point at one dish as "local" — except this one.

Longjiang pork knuckle rice (隆江猪脚饭) is what a city running at Shenzhen's pace eats: braised pork knuckle over rice, fast, cheap and filling. You'll find it everywhere, in small shopfronts full of people on their lunch break. It's about as close as Shenzhen comes to a signature dish.

Look for 隆江猪脚饭 on a shop sign at lunchtime. Order the obvious thing.

7

Check the exhibition calendar before you book

If technology is part of the reason you're coming, look up what's being exhibited in Shenzhen during your dates. The large trade shows are where you see new products before they reach anywhere else — and timing a trip around one costs you nothing.

Search the city's exhibition calendar for your dates.

If you have time, go to the mangroves

For a technology city, Shenzhen has an unexpectedly well-known natural side: its mangrove wetlands. Xiwan Mangrove Park is the one to visit if you have a spare half-day — a completely different Shenzhen from the one across the border.

Going on to Guangzhou? It's the natural next stop — see Guangzhou, if this is your first stop in China.

A note on where this comes from

Border hours and entry rules change more often than anything else on this page. The crossing details were checked in September 2026; the port-visa hours come from an official Shenzhen notice dated August 2025. Confirm anything time-sensitive before you rely on it.
